Chemical method of organic silicon modified alkyd resin

Organic silicon modified alkyd mainly adopts chemical methods, and there are generally three processes: the first is to add silicon intermediates, alcohols, and acids together into a reactor for one-step reaction; The second method is to first react the silicon intermediate with an alcohol, and then add an acid to react; The third type is formed by the reaction of alcohol and acid to form alkyd intermediates containing tibial groups, and then reacting with silicon intermediates. Actually, the third process is more commonly used. There are several commonly used synthesis reactions.

(1) Starting from the intermediate of silicon oxide (or silicon oxide) containing Si OMe bonds and the intermediate of alkyd resin containing C OH bonds, obtained through dealcoholization reaction
(2) Starting from the intermediate of silicon (or silicon oxide) containing Si-OH bonds and the intermediate of alkyd resin containing C-OH bonds, obtained through dehydration reaction
(3) Cool reaction between alkyd resin (or polyol) containing light groups and silicon oxide (or silicon oxide) containing silicon groups
(4) Functional silica gel (or silica gel) condenses with excess polyols and then reacts with polybasic and fatty acids
(5) Alkyd modified silicone resin is obtained by one-step reaction of the intermediate of silicon oxide calcination with polyols, polybasic acids, and fatty acids.

The physical method is the earliest modification method used, which involves directly adding organic silicone resin to the alkyd resin reaction at the end point and cold mixing it with medium to low oil alkyd resins. Organic silicone resin may be connected with alkyd resin through covalent bond under high temperature, but it is also possible that most organic silicone resins are only miscible with alkyd resin. In order to improve the miscibility of organic silicone resin, organic silicone resin often contains some long-chain compounds. Through such simple mixing, the outdoor weather resistance of alkyd resin is greatly improved. Generally speaking, using high phenyl silicone resin with good compatibility and alkyd resin with medium to low oil content for cold mixing has better thermoplastic properties, faster air drying speed, and better solubility than using high methyl content. Nevertheless, the modification effect is still poor, so it has now been phased out.

Early chemical modification methods mostly used a step-by-step synthesis process, which started from organic silicon containing SiX (X is Cl, OMe, OEt, OAc, etc.) bonds, first reacted with glycerol, and then reacted with dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride to obtain modified alkyd resin. It can also start from a single reaction formed by polyols or fatty acids with polyols, first reacted with polyacids, and then co condensed with hydroxyl groups to obtain modified alkyd resin. Both of the above two methods have the disadvantages of complicated operation steps, easy gelatinization of products and difficult control of reaction end point; Subsequently, gradually starting from the intermediate containing SiOH or SiOR bonds, and conducting condensation reactions with pre made alkyd resin intermediates, or using organic silicon oligomers as polyols and alkyd resins for co condensation polymerization, organic silicon modified alkyd resins can be obtained. The alkyd resin modified through reaction has better weather resistance, while improving the curing performance of organic silicone resin and reducing its cost.

Organic silicon modified alkyd resin is mainly air dry, but it can also be modified with alkyd resin using thousand amino alkyd paint. According to reports, a silicone modified amino alkyd paint has a glossiness of up to 70% after three years of exposure in Florida, USA, compared to only 18% without improvement. A silicone alkyd block copolymer with a (A-B) - type structure was synthesized by condensation reaction between a light group terminated alkyd prepolymer obtained by alcoholysis method and an organosilicon prepolymer obtained by hydrolysis or heterofunctional group method, with a halo content of up to 20% and 30%. And use the block copolymer as the base material to make a varnish. This varnish has excellent comprehensive performance, which not only has the advantages of room temperature curing, film flexibility, impact strength, and adhesion of alkyd resin varnish, but also has the properties of heat resistance, weather resistance, light retention, powdering resistance, and water medium corrosion resistance of organic silicone resin. It has greatly improved compared to unmodified alkyd resin paint. After 10 years of use, the paint film is still intact and the appearance is good.
